Green Gang

Green Gang is an independent youth volunteer network, working to educate children and youth on the correlation between waste and climate change through visual interactive aids, storytelling and workshops. We use ‘waste’ as a tangible element to feed children’s imagination and power of curiosity to lead climate actions.

Story

Green Gang came into existence on Global Climate Strike Day, 25th September 2020 – when 3 young activists from Faridabad city wanted to act and fight the climate crisis from the ground. We started working on the issue of waste management at a community level and soon our team grew to 15 young people, which later turned into a citizen science movement with 300+ citizens. We engaged with local communities in residential clean-ups, waste collection drives and conducted capacity building workshops on waste segregation and management.

MISSION

To enable the next generation in solving the climate crisis from their homes, schools and society.

Our vision is to feed the curiosity of young minds to visualise climate change and lead actions.

Clean Up Drives

Every weekend, our drill was to go out, search for a mini-landfill in the city and pick trash like an intelligent ‘ragpicker’! We used to collect and segregate waste into plastic, paper, metal, glass and non-identifiable waste with our hands with proper protection gear. We also organized ‘waste collection’ camps where people used to come and drop their dry-segregated waste to us, from where we used to send it to the recycler and in return, we rewarded our citizens with a pack full of ‘compost’.

Educational Workshops

Gradually, with the interests of our team members we added ‘capacity building workshop’ for citizens and kids, to build their understanding on the larger issue of ‘waste crisis’ and how they can solve it from their homes with simple segregation, daily. Now, we conduct fun filled workshops in schools and virtually with the help of student clubs. We use interactive visual tools, color coded dustbin games, storytelling and practical experiments to promote visualization of the problem leading to action.

Collaborations

Over the years, we have collaborated with young and like-minded individuals and organizations in the sector who share the same vision with us. We have collaborated for a waste education workshop, poster making competition, and home brand audit for Greenkeepers Aryavarta, Advaita and Break Free From Plastic, respectively. Please see our instagram for more.

Communications

Through our dynamic work, we are part of many youth networks and know passionate individuals fighting to solve the climate crisis in their own way, through their own professions. We started an instagram series ‘Do Your Bit – a series of inspiring stories from scratch’ where different young and experienced people from different walks of life shared their hack of taking action to save the environment daily. We also presented our Climate Action Story as Climate Leaders for LCOY in India, as a lead up to COP26 organized by Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN) and Center for Environment Education.
